The most spectacular international big wave surfing event is back. The cliffs of ‘Cueto’ in Santander (Cantabria, Spain) holds every year a new edition of La Vaca Gigante. Waiting period: December 2024 – May 2025.
La Vaca Gigante is a big wave surfing event organized by the sports club ObsessionA2 and held in the Parque de Las Canteras–Cueto, Santander (Cantabria), within the UNESCO Global Geopark of Costa Quebrada.
Currently, La Vaca Gigante is the only extreme surfing event taking place in Spain over the last three seasons. In just a few years, it has crossed borders and established itself as one of the key big wave competitions in Europe. It is also a benchmark in sustainability: the United Nations certifies that the championship fully offsets its carbon footprint, making it a climate-neutral and pioneering event in its field.
It is an invitational event, meaning that spots are granted by direct invitation from the organizing club, ObsessionA2.
What truly makes La Vaca special are the characteristics of the wave: when the right weather conditions align, it can reach heights of 6 to 8 meters. To ensure the event takes place under optimal conditions, a long waiting period is set — from October to March — and the competition is called with one week’s notice, once the swell and wind forecast is favorable.
